About the Artist
Caitlin Fitzgerald
I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in New Orleans. I attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston and graduated in 2008 with a BFA. I focused there in stained glass, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, typesetting, illustrations, painting, and small metal work. Lately I have been expanding into lamp work and experimenting with hot glass.
I have always had an interest in storytelling, be it in the guise of myth, religion, legend, or folklore. I am fascinated by Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious, Campbell’s establishment of the Hero’s Journey, and Pinkola-Estes’ writing on myths about women. I particularly appreciate stories that change over time or are changed to suite new needs and the impact this has on our perception of truth. I like to explore and reference techniques found in decorative and religious arts in my process, and more recently exploring methods and materials used in taxidermy as it complements the theme of “preservation” that comes with honoring a sacred object or putting meaning on to an object that may otherwise have none. I strive to create work that viewers can have a relationship with, pieces that call to them for some reason so they can discover something new.
A few notable past events include two group shows at Brand New Orleans, a group show at Portside Lounge, a group show at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, a Best in Show award from UFORGE Gallery in Boston, and past membership in the Cambridge Art Association.
